Charlotte realised how dissatisfied she was with her life. Perhaps that was what she needed, a fresh start, away from all this.

  It would be so much better to move to a new town, where nobody knew her past, or about her dead husband. She would not have to accept the condolences offered to her, people talking about Roger as though she had suffered a huge loss. She had begun to feel as though she was living a lie, the man the town folks thought she had lost had never existed, her Roger had been a drunken wife beater, and worse.

  Trying to push thoughts of Roger from her head she smiled at Frank, the best thing would be to enjoy the here and now, when Frank left she could start to consider her options. Maybe if she got a job in one of the bigger towns she could go back to school and train for a new career. A whole fresh start.

  “What's on your mind?” Frank asked.

  “Nothing much, just thinking how tired I am of this place.”

  “You've lived here your whole life.”

  “That’s for me to decide. Now let’s get you home; I’ll make you something to eat there.”

  “No, I’ll walk myself home,” she turned and started to walk away from him.

  “I’m not letting you do that,” he said.

  “Roger got drunk and went gambling, and he ended up owing Rob a chunk of money.” She halted, sobbing again now, then continued. “They were both drunk when they came back to the house.”
