  Chapter One

Penny couldn’t believe Preston Summers had asked her out. Yes, really! Throughout school he had been Mr Popular, now he had grown into one of the hottest men she knew. Finally, someone saw her for the person she was, not the girl with too many curves. Her fuller figure had haunted her through school and then college. Now, it seemed, she had blossomed and Preston had noticed.

Her mother always told her this day would come. When Penny cried about not having a date on a Saturday night while all her friends were out, her Mom reassured her things would change. Penny struggled to believe her, but now she had been asked out on a date. A real date, with the kind of man women lusted for.

Carefully dressing in her new dress, chosen to flatter her figure, she carefully applied her make up. Even with butterflies in her stomach she managed to keep a steady hand, looking at her reflection in the mirror she had to admit she looked immaculate.

Penny always took pride in her appearance, loving the latest fashions, but always being conscious of not making herself look stupid. Sensible about her size, happy to flaunt her curves, but not show too much flesh. She was ready for her date.

Preston picked her up in his flash car. WOW! Beeping his horn to let her know he was waiting.

“He’s not coming in to introduce himself?” her Mom asked.

“Of course not. That would not be cool. And Preston is definitely Mr Cool.” Penny replied excitedly.

“It's just a shame he isn't Mr Good Manners,” her Mom said, feeling a little worried.

“Come on, Mom! Don't spoil it.”

“Oh. Forget I spoke; remember I’m not up with what the cool kids do these days.” She kissed Penny on the cheek and watched her walk down the drive. Penny opened the car door and got in, her Mom stood and watched them drive off hoping her daughter would have the best evening ever. Deep down she had a niggling feeling Mr Flash would break her daughter's heart.

“This is a great car,” Penny enthused. She didn't know much about cars, but she could tell this one was expensive.

“My parents got it for me, thought I deserved it, and I didn’t say no.” Preston spoke without even turning to look at her.

Penny tried to make conversation as they drove, too excited to register how rude he behaved. Ignoring most of her small talk, only talking when the conversation involved anything about him.

They went to watch a movie, she didn’t even care it was full of car chases and people getting blown up. She was on a date. When they went for pizza after, and he expected her to pay for her own, she didn’t care. She was on a date with Preston Summers.

They talked; well he talked, about himself and the job his parents managed to get him. He talked about his big plans, and he would no doubt fulfil them, after all his parents had money.

Penny hung on his every word, who wouldn’t? Preston was hot, six feet tall, fit from playing sports and a smile that took her breath away. She still couldn’t work out how or why he had noticed her, but he had and now she sat here just like any other girl.

“It's getting late, we'd better get going,” Preston said, standing and getting his coat.

Penny looked at her watch, “It's only nine thirty, I don’t have to be home 'til eleven.”

“I have things to do,” he replied, shrugging his coat on and heading for the door. Of course, he must be busy, someone always wanted a piece of him, he was so popular.

Penny grabbed her coat and trotted after him. He fished the keys out of his pocket and unlocked the car. She didn’t mind that he never held the door open for her, instead she scolded herself for expecting him to be more romantic on their first date. She should be grateful he had asked her out at all, no one else ever did.

She put her seatbelt on and waited for him to start the engine. He didn’t. Instead he leaned over and kissed her. So unexpected, Penny sat rigid with shock. As his lips worked on hers, his hand groped her breasts, fondling them roughly.

“Is this what happens on first dates?” Penny thought. She realised she was naive, but this was not what she expected.

Trying to relax she moved her lips, ignoring the clash of teeth, after all her knowledge of kissing was based on magazine articles and a quick snog she had at a party when she was seventeen. The same night she drank alcohol for the first time, unfortunately sitting with her head down the toilet being sick stuck in her mind more than her first kiss.

Preston's hand moved lower, sliding down her thigh, lifting the hem of her dress and tugging it up. Penny forgot how to breathe; this definitely was not what happened on first dates. Was it?

His hand inched closer to her sex; she knew she was hot and wet down there. She had been having fantasies about this date since he asked her out three days ago. Penny had been in a permanent state of arousal all day imagining how he would treat her. But in her fantasies he had been a complete gentleman, in reality he was not.

The voice in Penny's head told her his actions were wrong, no matter how much she wanted him to like her, this was not the way it should be.

Preston pushed the tip of his finger into her sex, she nearly hit her head on the car roof. Not to be put off he continued his probing, his thumb finding the sensitive nub of her throbbing clit. She had to admit it felt good, his finger pushing in and out of her sex and his thumb bringing her to a peak of arousal. For a couple of seconds she let him continue, and then her head won.

“Preston,” she said putting her hand over his and trying to stop him going further. “I’m not ready for this, not on a first date.”

Preston carried on moving his hand. “Why not, your pussy is wet and ready for it.”

Penny blushed, glad it was dark so he wouldn’t be able to see. “I’m sorry, I’m just not comfortable doing it here, in the car.” She lied, she wouldn’t be comfortable doing it any where. She expected to get to know someone first before anything this intimate.

“Well how about you put your head in my lap and see what you find there.” He withdrew his fingers from Penny's sex, instead unzipping his pants. Leaving her in no doubt what he wanted.

“I don’t think so. Perhaps when we know each other a little better.”

Preston laughed, “This is the one and only date. I only asked you out as a bet. The other guys wanted to know how far a desperate virgin like you would be willing to go.”

“A bet!” Penny felt physically sick. “Why would you do something so cruel?”

“Cruel? I’m doing you a favour. How many times have you been asked out?”

Penny sat silently praying this was all a bad dream.

  “None. Right?”

“I want to go home.” Biting her lip, Penny tried not to cry.

“Then go home, I have other places to be.”

  “You're
not going to take me?”

  “You haven't earned it.”

Penny opened the door and got out of the car, not wanting to stay in there one more minute. Preston reached across and yanked the door shut, driving off, the tyres squealing. Penny stood stunned, all alone. Trying hard to keep herself together she phoned her Dad and asked him to come get her.

That was the one and only time Penny had been on a date.

  ***

Penny woke up, trying to shake off this recurring. That night had shaped her life. It was the night she decided she would never let a man fool her again. If they couldn’t see past her fuller figure, that was their loss. Instead she built her own business, achieving success doing something she loved.

Stretching she looked at the clock next to the bed. Still early, she could stay in bed for a half hour longer, but she got up anyway, trying to escape the dream. She pulled on the first clothes she came across, not bothering too much what she looked like. Who cared, as long as she looked presentable to her clients. After all they trusted her with their best loved possessions.

The dream always left her in a foul mood, at least until she had a cup of coffee and started work, then everything felt much better.

Knowing this she went to the kitchen, making coffee and toast. Taking them with her she went outside to greet the day. The early morning sun shone down, warming the table standing outside her back door. Smiling she sat down, a beautiful tabby head came and brushed against her.

“I thought I might find you here.” She tickled the cat under its chin, a rumbling purr vibrated through the warm furry body as it rubbed itself against Penny, tail in the air. “You always find the best places to sit.”

Sorrow was the catalyst that shaped Penny's life after her date with Preston. It had been a couple of days later, still mortified by what had happened when she came across the little cat. Abandoned, he had either been set upon by a dog or another cat, nearing death she had taken him to the vet and nursed him back to health. His recovery had brought her back to life, showed her that there were some things worth living for, and she didn’t need a man to make her feel worthy.

With her parents’ help she purchased a dilapidated house with a couple of acres of land and opened her own cattery, working hard to transform the house and buildings into a viable business. After ten years of hard work she was debt free and knew there was nothing else she would ever want to do with her life. Firmly a cat person she loved looking after them, preferring to spend more time with pets than people.

Her latest project was to build a new annex to take in unwanted cats and rehome them. Today was the day work would finally begin. It was not a huge project, so she had asked her usual builder to complete the work. He was getting on in years, but she trusted him, knowing he would do a good job for a fair price.

Penny was both excited and nervous, which probably explained the visit from the past in her dreams. It always bothered her at times when she was stressed.

“OK, Sorrow. Let’s get started, Darrell will be here in an hour to start work, let’s get everybody fed first.

Sorrow looked at her with his big green eyes, stretched his body, and went back to sunning himself on the table. She stroked his soft head and went back inside with her cup. Putting on her boots before going out to feed all her guests.

That’s how Penny thought of the cats she looked after, she treated them kindly, understanding their confusion at being away from home. It was her compassion that had made the business such a success. When her clients’ pets went home happy, her clients were happy, in this way Penny had lots of repeat business.

  Chapter Two

Penny had just finished and was putting a pot of coffee on when she heard Darrell’s truck coming down the lane. Nearly as old as it’s owner his truck had a particular sound that she always recognised. They always started a job with fresh coffee and home-made cookies; she had made his favourite, choc chip, the evening before. Darrell had helped her when she first renovated the house, this was a tradition.

Penny enjoyed talking to the old man, he had a great sense of humour. She was quite convinced that Darrell thought she must be mad, a young woman living on her own, but she also knew he respected her, and that counted for a lot to Penny.

He pulled up in front of the house, Penny went out to meet him, smiling broadly. Walking around to the truck door she stood rooted to the spot when it opened and out stepped the kind of builder you saw on calendars, not in real life. He had jeans and a t-shirt on, hugging his lean, toned body perfectly. His skin was tanned and he wore sunglasses which he now removed, revealing the most intoxicating eyes she had ever seen. Blue, like the early morning sky on a clear summer day, when he smiled his welcome they lit up warmly.

“Hello, Miss Davies?” He held out his hand to her.

Still in a daze she took it, finding her hand gripped in a warmth and strength that made her heart flutter. “Yes,” she managed to reply.

“Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Carl, Darrell’s nephew.”

“Darrell’s nephew?” Penny repeated, knowing she sounded like an imbecile.

Carl smile widened. “Yes, he’s hurt his back, nothing serious, but he can’t work for a few weeks. He’s managed to put off all his other work, but he knew you were anxious to get started with the new building and he asked if I could take over.” He still smiled although he must have registered the look of dismay on Penny's face. Because he added, “If that's OK with you?”

“Of course, although I could put it off until he is better.” Penny really wanted the building done, but this man made her uncomfortable. He made her feel like a woman, stirring something inside her she kept deeply buried. “But I would hate to inconvenience you. Taking over the job at such short notice.” She added not wanting to sound rude.

“It's really no problem. I’ve just come back from Europe and was at a loose end, it'll give me something to do, and keep me out of trouble.”

Penny sighed, this would be tough when all she could think about was how much trouble she would like to get into with him. These feelings confused her as men no longer held any real attraction, not physically, her view was the better the packaging the more rotten the inside. Catching her train of thought, she chided herself for sounding so bitter. This man couldn’t be that bad, Darrell was a decent guy and she knew he wouldn’t have sent any trouble her way.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound rude, it’s just I’m used to dealing with Darrell, you took me off guard.” Penny decided to treat him as though he was a client, warm and friendly, but slightly distant. Boundaries that were not to be crossed. “Shall I show you where to start?”

“If you want.” He relaxed as she spoke, adding, “Although I might work better if you invite me in for coffee.”

“Excuse me?” Already she felt he was being a bit too familiar.

“Darrell always tells me you make the best home-made cookies he has ever tasted, he promised me there would be some this morning.” He watched her face, trying to fathom out where her hostility was coming from. “But of course, I’m a stranger, forget I mentioned it. I’ll grab my tools.”

Penny realised how rudely she was behaving, not like her at all. “No. Come in, coffee's on. I didn’t realise Darrell would have told you about that.” She turned and walked into the house.

“Are you kidding,” his voice trailed after her, “Darrell sees it as a perk of the job, he always mentions it when he’s done work for you.”

Penny blushed, thinking how sweet it was that someone actually talked about her, and not in a negative way.

Pouring a steaming mug of coffee for them both, and offering him a cookie, they stood in her kitchen. Penny was struck by the charisma this man possessed; he was warm and friendly, even though they had only just met. He reminded her of his uncle; Darrell had been kind to her over the years, always going out of his way to help. She was certain when she started out, and had little money, he didn’t charge her what most builders would have. Taking pity
on her no doubt, as most people did.

Poor Penny, growing into a lonely old spinster. They didn’t realise she was happy, well content at least, living on her own. She thought that was what Carl was doing now, either that or he was at his ease because she was not the kind of woman men flirt with. Due to her fuller figure she assumed women saw her as no threat, and men saw her as the kind of woman you confide in, not date.

“Darrell wasn’t kidding; these are the best cookies I have ever tasted.”

  Penny smiled, “Thank you.”

“You know the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, your boyfriend is lucky to have such a good cook around.”

  “I don’t have a boyfriend.”

“Really? I figured you must have, or a husband, but no wedding ring.”

What was he doing looking to see if she wore a wedding band? “No. I’m on my own, and that's the way I like it.” It came out sharper than she planned. Right now she wanted this man out of her kitchen, or preferably out of her life. He made her act differently, not her normal accommodating self.

He must have picked up on her animosity because he asked, “Shall we go and take a look at the site?”

“Sure.” She piled everything into the sink and opened the back-door. Sorrow got to his feet and ambled over for more fuss. Penny scratched him behind his ears, he began purring again, wanting more attention. “Go on Sorrow, you stay in the sun, you'll only get in the way.”

“Sorrow, that's a strange name for a cat.” Carl said stroking his warm fur. “Did you name him, or did he already have a name.”

“I named him. It didn’t seem strange at the time, he was nearly dead when I first found him. I suppose it summed up how we both felt then.”

“Sorrow. OK, I get it.” Carl sounded thoughtful. Penny doubted a man like Carl would ever really know the meaning of sorrow. With good looks and charm he reminded her of Preston, always getting what he wanted. Yet Carl seemed to have more depth to his character, she had to give him that.
