  “I thought I was. Then something changed, your dad told me you were coming home and I knew I had to take a chance.”

  “One me?” Tammy whispered.

  “Come on, Tammy. There's always been that spark between us.” He leaned forward, his body pressing against hers. “Don’t tell me you have never wondered what it would be like, us two?”

  “Goodnight Tammy,” he said starting to walk away. “Welcome home.”

  Tammy went inside and shut the door behind her. Very slowly she climbed the stairs to her room. She only just found the energy to change out of her clothes before falling into bed. As she closed her eyes she had to pinch herself to prove she had not dreamed the whole evening.

  Chapter Two

  “Come on, sleepy head!” her dad called, “Breakfast is ready.”

  Tammy groaned and slowly sat up. She wasn’t too sure how she was going to face the day. Or at least face Sam. What had passed between them last night had been so unexpected, so intimate.

  That was her problem; she didn’t think she had ever been so intimate with anyone before. Yes, she had had lovers, but nothing like that had ever happened. Sex up until now had always been the missionary position, and oral sex had been a lot tamer.

  She pulled the pillow over her head and lay back down. Perhaps she could spend the next week or so in bed. Hiding in her room, she had done that enough time in the past.

  There was a knock on her bedroom door. “You OK, honey?”

  “Yes, dad. I’ll be down in two minutes.

  Pulling herself together she got up and showered very quickly. Then she grabbed the first clothes she put her hands on and left her room. She had come to see her father, so he had to be her priority while she sorted out her feelings for Sam.

  Tammy went downstairs; her dad had cooked her a breakfast of bacon and eggs, with toast and fresh coffee. The smell made her mouth water, and she tucked into it while her father watched.

  “Aren't you having any?” she asked, taking a sip of coffee.

  “I ate earlier, you know me, like to be up early. I have some jobs to do over at the Hardy’s then I’ll be back for lunch, can you find something to do for the morning?”

  “Sure, Dad,” she said.

  “Then perhaps you can help me do some weeding, and I have some tomatoes to plant out.” He was gathering his keys and wallet ready to leave.

  “I’d like that, Dad. Don’t over do it,” she said as he disappeared out the door.

  “Don’t you worry about me, I’m as fit as a
fiddle.”

  She smiled to herself, the one thing she loved about her dad was the way he always seemed so capable. All through her awkward growing up years, and there had been quite a few of those, he had been the one thing she could depend on. It was nice to see that hadn't changed.

  Finishing her breakfast she washed the dishes and poured herself another cup of coffee. Taking the hot cup she went outside and sat in the morning sun, reflecting on the previous night. In the warm sunshine, sat at her father’s table, she struggled to believe it hadn't all been a dream.

  Looking up at the Wishing Tree made her remember every touch of Sam on her body. What the hell was he playing at? She didn’t know, but her own desire for self preservation had convinced her it was a game to him. She could not let herself believe that he meant for them to have any kind of permanent future together, her heart was too fragile to endure that kind of let down.

  Tammy spent the morning pottering around the house and garden. She became alert every time she thought she heard a car approach, or the front gate open, but Sam never came to see her.

  At noon her dad returned from Sam's ranch and between them they prepared a simple lunch with potatoes and fresh vegetables from the garden. Tammy enjoyed the simple process of picking what they were going to eat; it was something she had become removed from while she had been away.

  “So what plans do you have, Tammy?” her dad asked when they were seated outside under a sun umbrella eating their lunch.

  “Well, I have a project I’m finishing up now, and then I had planned on applying for a grant to study the coral reefs off Australia. But I might change my mind and find something closer to home.”

  “That would be nice, I have missed you these last few years, and Australia seems an awfully long way to go.” He picked up a potato and popped it in his mouth.

  “I’m sorry I was away for so long,” she said, feeling the need to apologise once more.

  “Hey, don’t worry about it, I understand you needed some time to be yourself. It can’t have been easy for you growing up here with just a man to take care of you.”

  “You did a great job, Dad.” She put her hand over his and gave it a firm squeeze. “I didn’t turn out so bad did I?”

  “No, I’m proud of you, and your mother would be too, never forget that.” He turned and looked out over to the rose bushes, Tammy knew they had some significant place in her father’s heart linked to her mother. She had never asked him about it before, maybe she would get around to it in the next few days.

  “Sam asked me to let you know you were welcome to go over there tomorrow, if you like.”

  “Tomorrow?” She had thought she would see him today.

  After what had passed between them, all the things he said, she had imagined if he had any real interest in her he wouldn’t have been able to stay away. Perhaps she had read the signs wrong after all.

  “He said something about you needing some time to settle into the way things were. Odd, didn’t quite get his meaning, but then he was busy, he had a day of appointments. Busy man, got a lot of responsibility on young shoulders, still he knows how to get what he wants, he’s like his father in that respect.”

  “I’m surprised he hasn't settled down yet,” Tammy hated to use her father for information, but she wanted to now all she could about Sam's personal life, and she couldn’t ask the man himself, could she?

  “Came close with that last one, bought her a ring and everything, but she wasn’t right for him, anyone around here could see that.”

  “Oh, why not?” Her heart began to race, waiting for his reply. She felt ridiculous, though, pumping her own father for information.

  “She was a city girl; you know high heels and fast cars. Not the sort to live around here. I gather she thought they would live in the city when they were married, but he wanted to live at the ranch. Stands to reason, it’s where his family have always lived.”

  “Must have been hard, calling off the engagement like that?”

  “I guess, but he seems happy enough, was whistling a great deal this morning.” He gave her a penetrating look, unbelievably she managed to keep her face calm.

  They had finished eating, he got up from the table, and Tammy turned her head so he could not see her smile to herself. She was glad she had made him happy; she just needed to know what his motives were.

  “Come on, Tammy, those weeds are only going to get bigger if we don’t start digging them up.”

  They spent an amiable afternoon pulling weeds and talking about the various people who lived in the small town. It was good to hear about people she had grown up with, who had married who, and also news on the scandals that had happened. Tammy would never have guessed Mr Bartlett the ranch hand over at Hardy’s ranch was gay, someone must have had an even harder time than her growing up with that big secret.

  By the time they had finished their evening meal Tammy was ready to go to bed when her father did. She felt tired, but relaxed after the day of manual labour. Yet as soon as her had hit the pillow she began to obsess over Sam, and whether or not she would go over to his house tomorrow.

  One thing Tammy had never been was a coward. There were many times when she was growing up when it would have been much easier to give in and avoid situations that made her uncomfortable, but that wasn’t her. She was a fighter, even if it caused her pain and anguish.

  So she got up early and showered, picked a summer dress that emphasised her breasts, but slimmed the rest of her a little. Show off your assets, that was what she had learned, both in business and pleasure. Pleased with the image she saw reflected back at her, she went down to breakfast.

  “You look nice today,” her dad said.

  “Thought I’d better look presentable if I’m going over to the big house,” she said.

  He smiled, “I’ll walk over with you, Sam left me a list of jobs to do.”

  “Left you a list? You mean he’s not at home?”

  “No, he got called away,” her dad answered taking his plate over to the sink.

  Tammy felt winded; she had expected to see him today, to try to resolve whatever it was between them. The waiting was starting to tell, she had always been a little impatient, and now she was a little worried. Maybe the reason he wanted her to go over today was because he was out of town, and out of her way.

  Well her dad was waiting for her, she would have to go and get as much work done as possible so she didn’t have to bother him again.

  She ran upstairs and grabbed her laptop, then joined her father for the short walk over to the Hardy’s Ranch. Tammy remembered the times, as a teenager, when she would walk to meet her father from work hoping to catch a glimpse of Sam. Today she felt just the same, only now she knew he wasn’t there.

  Going around the back and through the door into the house where all the workmen gathered she said “Hello” to some of the old faces she remembered. The only thing to cheer her up was the looks some of those faces gave her, they obviously appreciated her curves too, and no one teased her about her weight, as they had always done before.

  “Hi, Gerry. Sam told Tammy she could come over and do some work. She needs access to the internet, do you know where she's supposed to go?” her dad asked the foreman.

  “Sure, he said for her to go right on and use his office,” Gerry answered.

  “His office?” Tammy repeated.

  “Yes, said he wouldn’t be using it much today, should have everything you need.” Everything but the ability to concentrate when the whole room would remind her of him. Still, she only had to get through today, and then if he wanted to avoid her, he could; she would stay well away from him.

  Tammy went and found Sam's secretary who showed her into the office and helped her set up internet access. Stephanie had worked for Sam, and his father before him, she oozed authority, and made Tammy feel like the office temp. Still she offered Tammy a coffee and brought it back to her, before closing the door on T
ammy and leaving her to work.

  This suited Tammy, she was not in the mood for small talk, and once started she buried her head in her work, determined to get everything she needed to completed and then submitted. This would leave her with no excuse to have to come back here again.

  The day wound on, she had brought a packed lunch to eat, and even that was taken sat at the desk. Stephanie came back a couple more times, but only stayed briefly to refill Tammy's coffee cup.

  It was about 3.30pm when she heard voices outside, she could tell it was Stephanie talking to a man, but figured it was one of the ranch hands. So when the door opened and Sam slipped in she was completely taken by surprise.

  “Hi, there. Hope you’ve found everything you need?” he asked, coming over to the desk.

  Tammy jumped up, the papers she was working on spilling onto the floor. “You frightened the life out of me; I thought you were away on business.” She bent down to start picking everything up.

  “I was,” he said coming around to help her.

  She looked up, taking in his very expensive and extremely well cut suit. Her mouth almost watered at the site of him, his tanned skin so kissable against the stark white of his pressed collar.

  Dragging her gaze away from him she set about sorting her papers out, bending over the desk to put them in order. Sam moved behind her, making her bolt forward when his hand caressed her bottom.

  “What are you doing?” she demanded.

  “Thinking how very tempting it is to take you now, over my desk.” His other hand began stroking and caressing her too.

  Tammy tired to regain her composure, to tell him to stop it and leave her alone. Yet the feel of his strong hands stroking and kneading her flesh was too much. If all he wanted was a quick affair, surely that was better than nothing at all, at least she would always have the memory of him.

  He slid his hand under her dress, pushing it under her lacy panties. Leaning forward he whispered in her ear, “I locked the door when I came in, no one will disturb us, say you want me too and I will make you come right here in my office.”

  His mouth moved closer to her ear, nipping the lobe and then sucking it in gently, she shuddered, filled with longing and desire. He was asking her if she wanted sex with him, if she had any thought to self preservation she would have said no, instead she breathed, “Yes.”
